Hands on with the Phantom Vision 2 Plus +
The Phantom vision 2 + is the newest Quadcopter available from DJI. This model follows on from the highly successful Phantom Vision 2. The difference with the Plus version is that it has a new GIMBAL camera that allows for super smooth filming in all conditions.
The camera is able to film in many different resolutions as shown in the specification tab. However we have found that the best for filming is 1080P 30FPS. In some circumstances the 720P 60FPS resolution is preferred, this of course is all down to personal preference.
Phantom Vision 2 Plus + Hands on – How does it work ?
Out of the box
To get the Vision 2 Plus going was extremely easy and did not take any effort at all to setup. We simply screwed on the propellers and charged the battery for an hour. We then took it out side and were in the Air within a couple of minutes. For people new to flying model aircraft this quad is ideal as it is so easy to use. Within 15 minutes we were flying this thing like a pro.
How high does the Phantom Vision 2 Plus go ?
We have had this quad up to 1500ft and had full control of it at all times. We have seen reports of this going to to 2000ft but I did not achieve that with our test unit.
How far can away can it go ?
Here again we tested this to the point where we lost connection with the transmitter, we actually maged to get 1.2 miles away before the Phantom Vision returned to home.
How Fast can it go ?
During out tests in non windy conditions we were abe to get the Phantom Vison 2 Plus up to around 35MPH quite easily. There are reports of people achieving up to 65MPH with a tailwind.
Return to home ?
This is the most important feature and one of the first things you should make sure is working before you even think about taking off. Once you turn the Vison Plus on it will look for GPS Satellites, once it has at least 8 detected the lights under the unit will flash green fast, this indicates that the Quadcopter has logged its start position. Now when ever you lose any connectivity to the transmitter the quad will automatically return to where you started. This is the first thing to test as it is the most important. Once you gain confidence in this it will allow you to fly further without worry.
With a 14mp Still camera and options for 1080i,1080p,720p and everything else below that. Take a look at the test footage tab to see some great videos made specifically on the Phantom Visions 2 Plus to get an idea of what your videos will look like.
Can you fly it at night ?
Yes it is possible to fly at night but the camera on the vision + is not very good in extreme low light conditions.
We absolutely love the Vision 2 Plus and think that the Gimbal camera is well worth the extra money over the original Vision 2. There is still a debate on whether a person should buy the Phantom without the camera and put a Go pro3 on it. This solution actually works out at about $300 more than buying the Vision Plus. Of course the image quality will be better but you will lose the function of controlling the camera during flight like you can with the PLUS. Overall we would say this is the better solution for most users.
