Canon Inc. has announced that they are now accepting contest entries for the 2017 New Cosmos of Photography Competition. Entries for the competition will be accepted starting April 20 until June 8, 2017 and should be submitted through Canon’s Web Application Entry system.
The competition is open to the public, and anyone can submit an entry regardless of their age and nationality. Contestants can submit any number of entries and use any theme or format.
This year’s competition focuses on creative photographic works that “provide a glimpse of the next frontier”. They should be made by new photographers and, aside from being original, they must use techniques and concepts that go beyond the traditional approach. Digital submissions — either photos or videos — are accepted.
The Excellent Award Selection Committee will convene in July 2017 to select 7 Excellence Award winners as well as 14 Honorable Mention Award winners. The Grand Prize Selection Committee will meet in November to choose a Grand Prize winner from the 7 Excellence Award winners, and they will release a report about their decision in December. The winning works of the 2017 Competition will be added to the New Cosmos of Photography Gallery in January 2018, and the latest issue of the New Cosmos of Photography Magazine will be released in March.
The Grand Prize winner will receive 1 million JPY (equivalent to around $9,176 US) and a Canon EOS DSLR camera. He will also be given the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum on October 21 to November 12. Those who are given the Excellence Award and Honorable Mention Award will also receive prize money as well as the opportunity to have their works displayed at the The New Cosmos of Photography Tokyo Exhibition 2017 in October. This way, their efforts will be recognized and they’ll be encouraged to continue their journey in creative photography.
The New Cosmos of Photograph was launched in 1991 and is now in its 40th year. As Canon’s cultural support project, it aims to discover and encourage new photographers who are finding ways to express themselves through creative photography. It also strives to “push the boundaries of photography’s potential” and promote unique forms of creative photographic expressions.
