There was a time when taking pictures meant you only had one shot to get it right. Well, Fujifilm is bringing that back with the Instax Square SQ6.
Although, it’s not really throwing it back that far as the camera comes with a mirror to help with composition – but that’s if you take selfies. And like some cameras of old, you can immediately see the physical results of a capture.
Instax Square SQ6 Design & Features
With the Instax SQ6, you only really get one shot when taking a photo. The camera doesn’t have an SD card so absolutely no post-processing can be done. Then again, unlike other analog cameras back then, this one is equipped with features to make sure that snaps turn out fine.
With its auto exposure control feature, you don’t have to tinker with settings just to make sure the image turns out properly exposed. The high-performance flash will take into account the brightness of the surrounding then set the right shutter speed to ensure a clear photo. The feature also works in low-light environments, like at a party or anywhere indoors.
And unlike the really old cameras from decades ago, the SQ6 comes with three color filters that you can fit over the flash. This way, you can add more creativity to your shots. The three filter colors are green, orange, and purple.
The Instax SQ6 also has a selfie mode which adjusts accordingly to ensure that the picture comes out right. In selfie mode, the camera automatically adjusts focus and brightness. Since you only have one shot, Fujifilm have kindly provided a small mirror right next to the lens to ensure that you are indeed in the shot.
Instax Square SQ6 Group Photo Taking
What if you want to take a group photo? You’ll have to do it the old way: find a stable spot, put your camera on the surface, use the Galilean finder to get everyone into the shot, and set the timer so you can include yourself in the photo. If a stable spot can’t be found, that’s when the tripod socket will be of most use.
Instax Square SQ6 Shooting Modes
The Instax SQ6 offers two other shooting modes apart from the Normal Mode. In Macro Mode, you can take close-up shots of subjects that are as close as 30cm. And as its name suggests, Landscape Mode is best used for scenic shots.
You can also get extra creative with your photo via double exposure mode. It is triggered by pressing the shutter button twice. This particular shooting mode superimposes two images into one film.
The images that get instantly printed have a 1:1 aspect ratio and come in a 2.4 inch by 2.4 inch square format.
If you’re not into the whole analog camera movement, Fujifilm has also taken that into consideration. It’s still a square camera, and it goes by the name of Square SQ10. The difference being it’s digital and therefore more expensive.
Competition from Lomography
If you like the competition, Lomography has a square camera of its own. However, if you really want a throwback to when it required effort to take a photo, the SQ6 is what you’re looking for.
It may not have all the sophisticated features of modern-day cameras, but it fills that need to have pictures printed out in an instant. Of course, the camera uses Instax film, which can be bought in packs of 10.
Instax Square SQ6 Availability
The Fujifilm Instax Square SQ6 will be released on May 25 in the US and Canada. It will sell for $129.95 in the US and $159.99 in Canada. The camera will be available in three colors: gold, gray, and white.
