From the look of the camera to its functionality, the Olympus PEN E-PL9 is designed to attract the creative type. Specifically, a creative who relies on smartphones for taking photos. A touch screen operation ensures a smooth transition from mobile device photography. And just like smartphones, the camera is equipped with Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity for instant sharing online.
The PEN E-PL9’s petite size also makes it more comfortable for mobile phone shooters making the shift. It is compatible with Olympus’ lineup of more than 20 lenses and supports 4K video.
Intuitive menu
Smartphones are designed to be easy to use, with only a few gestures needed to get a certain task done. The same concept is applied to the E-PL9: the intuitive menu lets gives you access to many creative options that you can get familiar with before starting on more traditional settings.
You can start your journey with the AUTO mode, which provides a range of photographic situations that you just need to select. Whether shooting a moving subject or taking a selfie, the best setting will be chosen for you with just a simple touch. However, you can also get more creative control over the final output by adjusting common settings such as brightness and contrast.
Creative options
An Advanced Photo (AP) mode can be found on the top plate for quick access to photo modes. Since this is an Olympus product, it wouldn’t make sense for it not to have Art filters and there’s 16 of them in this model. Unlike other Olympus cameras, the Art filters on this camera are easily accessed via touch screen.
Achieving creative shots with the E-PL9 is also made easy. For instance, light painting is made easy with just a touch of a menu option and the help of a solid surface to stand the camera on. Producing other creative pieces such as HDR, multiple exposure, and sweep panorama are also possible with this camera.
In-body image stabilization
A well-built camera with top quality features just wouldn’t cut it if resulting photographers end up blurry and shaky. With Olympus’ own in-body stabilization technology, you can take pictures even in low-light situations and still get decent results. This feature is also aided by a TruePic VIII image processor which helps produce sharp results despite challenging conditions.
Interchangeable lens
The Olympus PEN E-PL9 is a Micro Four Thirds Camera so yes, it is compatible with the wide range of lenses available for Olympus Micro Four Thirds Cameras, including the M.Zuiko Digital 45mm F1.8 which produces beautiful bokeh.
Macro photography is also made easy with the E-PL9. Fashion and travel bloggers can take stunning close ups of food, jewelry, flowers, and other items in more detail with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 30mm F3.5 Macro lens.
You can also use legacy lenses in addition to the M.Zuiko lineup with the help of adapters.
The Olympus PEN E-PL9 will hit the market in the middle of March. It will be available in black, brown, and white, as well as a body-only package or with a kit lens.
