When people all over the world started using EOS 5D Mark II DSLRs for filmmaking, Canon essentially sparked an evolution in the world of optical and visual technology. The company knew that it had so much more to offer in terms of innovating technology for filmmaking and photography.
They were right. If you’re planning to get a new video camera this year, take a look at this C300 review closely.
The new Canon EOS C300 is a major leap towards digital revolution in cinematography. We got our initial trial run with this impressive high-tech camcorder and we were blown away.

Easy to Use and Handle
Our Canon EOS C300 review found the camcorder to be a well-balanced and efficiently designed gadget. It almost felt like a regular DSLR if not for the fact that it had bigger accessories like microphone, lens, and easy grip. In fact, even when we used the monitor module, the balance was still comfortable and the controls easily accessible.
With the detachable monitor module, you’ll have a customizable set of buttons and playback controls which gives better tweaking privileges to operators. When we tried to setup the camera on a mount, the process was very simple. We assumed that even for non-Canon users, the camcorder mount setup won’t be extremely challenging.
Varied Picture Profiles
The maximum frame rate for the C300 is 2997p and 59.94p, with other options in between these figures. We also found the Canon XF Codec to be a pretty good one. We shot everything at around 50MBps, which approximately gives you about 45 min. of footage for a 16GB card.
The picture profiles of the camera are easily customizable, the selling point for which I the C-log gamma, which products a color correct and film-ish output.
Exceptional Camera Performance
Canon’s C300, C100, and C500 series have remarkably improved on contemporary DSLR features, including resolution, range, and low-light settings. We found the captured images sharp, contrasted, and crisp even in low light.
Some people have even touted it as a low-light monster, a device with enough power to sense and capture crisp photos without grain or static noise. Maybe our only complaint is that it has no built-in microphone, something that is easily amended with a detachable high-end microphone.
Reasonable Value
For a whopping price of $16,000, you’d think the Canon EOS C300 would be the biggest force to reckon with in photography. Perhaps it is. But let’s take a brief look at its close competitors, namely Canon EOS C100 and Canon EOS C500.
The good news is that the C100 is about 15% smaller than the C300, primarily because it was designed for indie filmmakers and event videographers. You’ll also notice that the viewfinder is simplified and the LCD screen only 3.5-inches smaller. Its similarity to C300 is that it also uses a Super35-sized 8.3MP sensor, which provides an impressive resolution for images and performs exceptionally even in low-light conditions.
On the other hand, the C500 is highly identical to the C300, especially as they both have similar sensors. Its frame rates vary from 1 to 120 frames per second (ideal for slow motion footage). The camcorder also comes in two varieties, a standard C500 that is compatible with EF, EF-S, and EF Cinema lenses and a C500 PL model that is compatible with PL-mount EF Cinema lenses and PL-mount lenses.
Both the C100 and C500 have their own merits and if it were up to us, we’d have all three for filmography convenience.
The Bottom line
Canon is certainly stealing the spotlight with its slew of impressive and covet-worthy photography gadgets that are every filmmaker’s dream. They may be priced a bit, but their range of cameras and camcorders are definitely worth every cent. So if you have been looking to buy new kit, get any one of these two and you’ll see why Canon doesn’t disappoint!
