Canon VIXIA GX10 Overview
Smartphone cameras are increasingly being used to capture everyday moments. After all, why would you want to bring along a device that can’t be tucked into your pocket? But even with improving smartphone camera technology, there are still things that are better left to more advanced devices.
This is where the Canon VIXIA GX10 comes in. Designed specifically for consumer use, this camcorder records in 4K UHD and combines a series of features into a compact and portable device. It becomes the ideal recorder of choice if you want detailed footage with vibrant true-to-life colors, be it of your child’s first steps or documenting your first trip abroad.
Yes, the VIXIA GX10 is sure to attract attention wherever it is taken, but you will also be rewarded with stunning footage that you will undoubtedly cherish for a very long time.
Design & Features
The VIXIA GX10 was announced together with two other camcorders that also recorded 4K: the XF400 and the XF405. All of them more or less come with the same features but this is the model specifically engineered for consumer use. Then again, the other two can be as well but just for more advanced users. This one, however, seems to be tailored for newbies who want better image quality.
Equipped with a 1.0-inch 4K UHD CMOS sensor, the VIXIA GX10 allows the capture of 4K UHD videos at 60p, as well as slow motion capture up to 120fps in Full HD. Such a sensor also allows larger photosites which automatically improves images by producing less noise even in low-light situations. Of course, helping all this happen is a DIGIC DV 6 imaging engine.
One of the main issues in videography is blown-out highlights, but the VIXIA GX10 is equipped to handle that thanks to its Wide DR Gamma support. It allows for a 800% wide dynamic range that results in detailed photos with accurate color and therefore no blown-out highlights.
The VIXIA GX10 is fitted with a Canon 4K video lens that uses proprietary optical technologies to ensure only the best footage results. Even zooming across the entire focal length doesn’t bring about drastic changes in image quality. Even better, the 4K UHD sensor can stretch out the zoom to 30x when shooting in Full HD.
No one likes to be treated to a shaky video of your travels or any other event you decide to film. The Canon VIXIA GX10 deals with such a problem with a 5-axis optical image stabilization system.
Canon has also equipped this model with their very own Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a high-precision autofocus technology that ensure subjects are in focus and easily tracked. Focusing on a subject is also made easier thanks to a 3.5-inch touch panel LCD.
The VIXIA GX10 records MP4 footage to SD cards, which is a benefit as they are inexpensive storage devices with somewhat large capacities. There are two slots on the camcorder to allow simultaneous or relay recording.
Users can connect the camcorder to a standard SSD/HDD recorder thanks to an HDMI 2.0 terminal with 4K UHD 60p support. With this feature, it is easier to convert footage to ProRes or DNx formats to make editing and storage more efficient.
Wireless connectivity is also supported to allow the easy sharing and transmission of recorded files. The VIXIA GX10 can also be remotely controlled with the help of a web browser.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- It is a consumer-friendly 4K UHD camcorder.
- It is ideal for users who want to step up their videography a notch.
- It comes in a user-friendly compact design.
Cons
- It may not be worth the trouble given many DSLRs now offer video-recording capabilities.
Final Thoughts
The purchase of a Canon VIXIA GX10 does bring up a very good question: is it worth it? In the grand scheme of things, it looks like maybe it isn’t that good of an idea. Then again, if all you really want is good quality footage to document everyday life to share with friends or online, then you couldn’t go wrong with this camera.
