Sony PMW-160 – The Little Brother to the Sony PMW-200
The Sony PMW-160 has been in the market since the summer of 2012. It features three 1/3” Exmor CMOS sensors and a really powerful 20x power zoom lens. The camcorder also supports the 50 Mbps MPEG HD422 codec and MXF recording. It has been declared as a fit companion for the PMW-500 XDCAM HD422 shoulder mount camera. It is also great for both SD and HD applications.
Three 1/3” Full HD Exmor CMOS sensors (1920x1280)
With three full HD Exmor CMOS sensors, the PMW-160 is capable of achieving high resolution (100 Tvi), high sensitivity (F9 @ 2000 lx) and wide dynamic range.
3.5-inch WVGA (852x480) LCD Monitor
With a 3.5-inch LCD monitor panel, users can find it easy to read the screen. Not only that, with a larger screen, users are able to accomplish precise focusing during critical focus control, particularly when shooting in HD.
The LCD panel also displays various guidance when it comes to different shooting operations. For example, a histogram can be displayed so that you can visualize contrast in the shooting range. The display can also show lens information so you know the approximate DoF value using the current lens setting. It can also show brightness levels in percentage levels.
50 Mbps HD422 Recording
When using a UDF/MXF recording mode, full HD video (1920 x 1080) can be recorded at up to 50 Mbps with the use of the MPEG 422 compression technology. With this feature, users can really enjoy the benefits of having a proven, high-sped and intuitive XDCAM HD422 workflow.
The Sony PMW-160 also records video in MPEG HD (420) or DVCAM formats. However, the camcorder is not capable of proxy video.
Remote Operation
The PMW-160 comes with WiFi remote capability which means that the camera can be controlled through a mobile app. In addition, you can use the CBK-WA01 WiFi adapter – which is sold separately – to accomplish remote operation.
20x Sony G Series Lens
With this kind of lens, users can expect very good quality. They can also expect sharpness and just an overall great look.
Two SxS Memory Card Slots
The Sony PMW-160 comes built with two SxS memory card slots. Users can record up to 4 hours of video using 50 Mbps MPEG HD422 on to two 64 GB SxS-1A memory cards.
Other Features:
- SD recording and playback (DVCAM) standard
- UDF (Professional Disc compatible) or FAT (XDCAM EX compatible) file format mode shooting which allows camera to achieve similar high resolution files and workflows associated with other Professional Disc and XDCAM EX camcorders
- Low power consumption
- Compact and lightweight
- High-quality four-channel audio recording
- Shutter angle settings
- Picture cache recording
- Slow shutter function
- HD/SD-SDI output and composite/HD-Y output
- USB interface which allows camcorder to be connected as a card reader
- six Standard Gamma settings and four HyperGamma settings
- lens is compatible with the VCL-HG0872K 0.8x wide converter option
- built-in ND filters (1/4, 1/16, 1/64)
- 54 dB signal-to-noise ratio
- lens hood with shutter mechan
The PMW-160 has some similarities with the PMW-200, but what separates the two is that the PMW-200 has 1/2” sensors while the PMW-160 has 1/3”. Buyers of the PMW-160 prefer it over its big brother PMW-200 because of different focal lengths that is achieved by the lens as the PMW-160 can go a bit wider and tighter than the PMW-200.
