Sony has expanded the line of lenses available for users of E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras with the FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS standard zoom. The 24-105mm focal length is a popular choice among shooters, enabling them to shoot a variety of scenes, from portraits to landscapes. With fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus, the lens makes an ideal companion for different kinds of shoots.
Impressive resolution and image quality
With the FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS lens, Sony has designed a lens with really good corner-to-corner sharpness throughout its zoom range. In addition to providing outstanding image quality, the lens can also deliver beautiful bokeh along its entire focal length.
With an advanced optical design comprised of four aspherical lens elements, two of which being advanced aspeherical lenses, the lens is very much capable of delivering impressive imaging results. In addition, three extra-low dispersion glass elements also work with the aspherical elements to reduce chromatic aberration to deliver only the best resolution.
Lens flare and ghosting are also minimized thanks to an application of Sony’s own Nano AR coating. The FE 24-105mm lens also features a circular aperture that allows it to deliver high-quality bokeh expected of all lenses in Sony’s G series.
A compact and lightweight design
Shooters bring along cameras to different occasions, even a trip to the mall. Cameras can be heavy beasts and photographers don’t want the added strain of an equally hefty lens. Although one could expect this lens to be rather heavy due to the focal length it covers, Sony has designed it to be lightweight.
Weighing in at 663 grams or about 23.4 ounces, this lens is the lightest one in its class. As such, it doesn’t give shooters a lot of burden when they attach it to an E-mount camera body. As a result, photographers have a much more manageable camera system no matter what kind of shoot they are involved in. A system that isn’t troublesome is bound to provide a more flexible shooting experience.
Accurate and advanced autofocus
In the past, photographers needed to get settings absolutely right in order to nail a shot of a fast-moving subject, be it cars, animals, or athletes. Advances in lens technology has made the challenge of technical perfection a bit easier. While some degree of technical knowledge is still needed to capture a shot, other aspects are made easier.
In that regard, Sony equipped this lens with a Direct Drive SSM system that helps the lens’ focus groups change position a lot more accurately and with very little noise. This very feature also makes it ideal to bring along to shoots requiring a lot of silence (weddings and other solemn ceremonies).
The FE 24-105mm also comes with a customizable focus hold button and is protected against dust and moisture. The lens’ front element is also protected to limit dust, oil, water, and other contaminants.
The lens will ship in November and will sell for about $1,300 (US) and $1,700 (Canada). In the meantime, users can check out test shots made available at alphauniverse.com.
