The latest addition to Canon’s Cinema EOS family, Canon EOS C100 brings together the revolutionary technology of the DIGIC DVIII Image Processor, Canon CMOS sensors and EF lens compatibility all in a small, light body structure. With the newer camera announcements at NAB and the sudden price drop for the C100, many may have been led to think this camcorder, along with many others, is as good as old news. However, in this Canon camera review, we’ll tackle exactly why the C100 is one of the most significant yet underestimated cameras in the market today.

The Canon EOS C100 is a prosumer-level camcorder that provides film-like performance on its HD videos. It has superb range that very well competes with the shooting prowess of renowned DSLRs such as Canon’s EOS 5D Mark II. The C100’s better edge though is that it comes with a body designed to be more suited to video shooting. It simply is a more affordable entry-level model of its range.
First, let’s talk about the C100’s one prime point in this Canon camera review – price range. If you are interested to find out more about this particular camera for professional work, then that must mean your budget is limiting your shooting style. But this camera actually delivers far more than its price suggests. It doesn’t really have anything too fancy attached to it but it is still amazing even within its boundaries. It’s surprisingly strong and well-rounded for shooting from top to bottom.
Small Sensor Size
Sensors in DSLRs are huge as compared to traditional professional-grade camcorders. These usually come around 50x the area of typical 1/3-inch sensors. What will this great size get you? 1. greater surface for light collection thus, better sensor sensitivity; 2. wider aperture, allowing for shorter field depths.
This means with a C100 and its super 35mm CMOS with 9.84mp, your subject can be left well-focused while the background and foreground appear blurred with the “bokeh” cinematic effect.
Superior Lowlight Performance
If you read other Canon camcorder reviews, one thing you’ll notice is that the camcorders today just keep on getting better and better in terms of lowlight performance. This camera isn’t one to lose in that category. You can bring a whole lighting crew and the natural lighting the C100 gives you can still do a better job. The C100 remains one of the stronger candidates in the market for that organic and filmic look.
Is it compabitle with EF lenses?
With a C100, your range of options for lenses is wider due to Canon’s EF lens mount. Some Cinema lenses can come expensive though so if budget isn’t on your side, you can opt for the cheaper standard DSLR lenses. Go for the incredible L-series units if you have the luxury to splash on this one.

Despite these amazing features though, the C100 still has a few shortcomings. For one, it has a rather mediocre file compression. The 24Mbit file compression makes it difficult to handle the image noise. To solve this issue, many use the Atomos Ninja 2 harddisk recorder in getting uncompressed signals out the HDMI port and storing them to better codecs of choice. Plus, the C100 doesn’t have 50p, 60p, and high-speed shooting.
What’s the verdict?
Although its price can get you an equivalent of 2 or 3 standard DSLRs, there’s just no competing with the C100 in terms of its real camcorder features. The huge sensors that enhance its low-light capacities, continuous recording times and the carry-handle microphone attachments that make for decent audio connectivity are all worth what you’ll spend. There are more than enough reasons to buy this camera, you wont regret it.
